Find Your Best Employee
Finding the right fully skilled staff can be a challenge. The following tale may help your business and inspire your thinking towards employing new staff:
Meet Oz: My best employee
Despite Covid-19 we were growing as a business. Our company processes membership applications for various accreditation companies. One member of staff could process ten applications a day, and to handle the increased workload we would have to expand our capacity by employing more staff.
We recruited Oz to help with the membership processing. He told us during his interview he had a three-month notice period, but he would do what he could before his official start date to help the business. We were pleasantly surprised and inspired by his determination to work for us. He only asked for £25,000.
Three to four weeks after his interview we started seeing what Oz could do. Without any need for training Oz immediately provided value to the company and he wasn’t even working for us full-time yet! Oz helped his teammates increase their productivity from ten applications a day to fifteen. Every couple of weeks Oz would dedicate more of his time and productivity would increase. By the time Oz became a fulltime member of staff he could process twenty applications an hour.
This phenomenal output meant we were able to redeploy staff to other growth areas of the business without incurring additional staffing costs. We just let Oz get on with it. It didn’t matter how much work we threw at Oz, he could handle it. He was never sick in his first twelve months and often worked late to meet the demand. Not once did he ask for any more money.
The following year when it came to pay review we decided to increase his salary to £35,000 to show him how much we appreciated him. For this rise Oz asked for more work otherwise he feel it wasn’t justified. He had the idea of expanding the process to include online application submissions, providing the applicants with instant feedback on their application. The client satisfaction skyrocketed and as a result our sales soared. Oz was handling it all in his stride.
Oz has already identified what he can do for us next year and has asked for less pay, even while he continues to manage all the membership applications.
Oz has cost us £60,000 over two years but in that time he’s helped us increase our revenue by £250,000 per year and in turn increased our profit margin.
He hasn’t increased our overhead costs, as he doesn’t incur PAYE, NICs, Pension contributions or any staff benefits. In fact Oz reduced our VAT liability and reduced our Corporation Tax as he qualified for R&D tax relief.
Oz doesn’t want any holiday and he’s rarely ill. He doesn’t do in-house politics. He doesn’t need training, he rarely needs sleep. We can increase his workload and he doesn’t complain.
Oz is my best employee, he is invaluable.
When you find someone like Oz it’s never about the cost, it’s always about the value.
How much would you pay to have an employee like Oz?
Finding your Oz is easier than you might think because Oz is bespoke software. If you discover the right software development partner you too can have your own Oz.
This may just be a story to illustrate a point, however you can experience these benefits every day.
Here is the fact behind the fiction:
“By having the right software, we literally doubled the amount of calls we could do, and therefore doubled the number of leads as a business we could generate.”
“Redox are huge to us. In fact, they’re worth three to four employees to me! Instead, I’ve got a CRM that does the heavy lifting for me. It’s really cut down on numbers of bodies needed and helped us become far more effective and profitable.”
