SQL Engines on Hadoop

The market for SQL engines on Hadoop is not mono-cultural. There are multiple use cases for deploying SQL on Hadoop and there are more than 20 different SQL on Hadoop platforms. Mapping the latter to the former is not a trivial task, as different offerings are optimised for some purposes but not others.

Key differentiators between products are the use cases they support (of which we have identified six that we focus on), their performance and the level of SQL (ranging from SQL-92 or SQL 2011) they offer. This report examines the vendors in this space and provides our estimates of their product’s strengths relative to performance and SQL support, within the context of the identified use cases.
